Program skierowany jest do kandydatów znających biegle język angielski i zainteresowanych historią, językiem oraz kulturą polską, zwłaszcza do cudzoziemców z USA i Europy podejmujących studia slawistyczne, wschodnioeuropejskie lub judaistyczne.

Program

Dwuletnie stacjonarne międzykierunkowe studia magisterskie w języku angielskim, The Interdisciplinary MA Programme in Polish Studies, Jewish Studies, and History, to pierwsze tego rodzaju studia na Uniwersytecie Jagiellońskim, które odpowiadają potrzebie wszechstronnego kształcenia w zakresie historii i kultury polskiej oraz kultury żydowskiej. Dzięki współpracy pomiędzy Wydziałem Polonistyki, Instytutem Judaistyki oraz Wydziałem Historycznym stworzono unikalny program studiów, który – dzięki łączeniu perspektyw badawczych różnych dyscyplin i szkół krytycznych – daje swoim absolwentom możliwość wielowymiarowego spojrzenia na kluczowe dla wiedzy o literaturze i historii zagadnienia. Międzywydziałowe oraz międzynarodowe środowisko naukowo-dydaktyczne oraz niepowtarzalny artystyczno-intelektualny klimat Krakowa sprzyjają pogłębionym studiom nad kulturą i tradycjami Europy Środkowej.

Cele programu

Absolwenci międzykierunkowych studiów drugiego stopnia otrzymają ogólne wykształcenie humanistyczne oraz wszechstronną wiedzę w zakresie historii i kultury Polski od czasów najdawniejszych po dzień dzisiejszy, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem problematyki związanej z przemianami języka, literatury, teatru oraz rozwijających się na terytorium Polski tradycji żydowskich. Wiedza absolwenta pozwala rozumieć i interpretować historyczne i kulturowe procesy toczące się w Polsce, a w wymiarze szczególnie pogłębionym zjawiska mieszczące się w ramach jednej z czterech specjalizacji: historycznej, komparatystycznej (literatura porównawcza), teatrologicznej i judaistycznej. Po uzyskaniu dyplomu absolwenci przygotowani będą do pracy w archiwach, bibliotekach, szkołach oraz uczelniach, instytutach badawczych, wydawnictwach, zwłaszcza tych, które wiążą się z wybraną specjalizacją.

Studia drugiego stopnia pozwolą podejmować samodzielne wyzwania badawcze pod kierunkiem odpowiedniego opiekuna oraz kontynuować w przyszłości studia trzeciego stopnia.

Wykształcenie absolwenta umożliwia prowadzenie działalności popularyzującej wiedzę o historii, języku i kulturze polskiej oraz tradycji żydowskiej, zwłaszcza w środowiskach anglojęzycznych.

Struktura

An Interdisciplinary MA Programme in Polish Studies, Jewish Studies, and History to stacjonarne studia międzykierunkowe drugiego stopnia na kierunkach:

  • filologia polska (specjalność: komparatystyka literacka),
  • teatrologia,
  • historia (specjalności: historia oraz judaistyka).

Studia trwają cztery semestry (z możliwością obrony pracy magisterskiej po semestrze trzecim). W czasie studiów uczestnicy programu winni zrealizować 810 godzin zajęć i uzyskać 120 punktów w systemie ECTS.

Interdisciplinary MA studies are conducted within the framework of the cooperation of the three university units:

The Faculty of Polish Studies:

Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities; (CASH) was established in March 2007 by virtue of the ordinance of the Rector of the Jagiellonian University issued on the motion of the Dean of the Faculty of Polish Studies. CASH is a research and study unit forming a part of the structure of the Faculty of Polish Studies. In 2010 the Department of International Polish Studies became a part of it. The programmes of the Centre go beyond the strictly Polish-centred model of education and aim at developing studies of the Polish culture in a broad context of the humanities and world culture. At present the Centre offers the following programmes: international doctoral studies in English financed by the European Union as a part of the Erasmus Mundus programme (jointly with 16 other partner institutions from Europe, Asia, Australia, North and South America), semester-long and year-long programmes for foreign students (Study Abroad), summer schools for foreign students, courses in foreign languages for students of the Faculty of Polish Studies of the Jagiellonian University as well as open conference and seminar cycles with the participation of some most distinguished representatives of world humanities (which include the meetings organised as a part of the International Joseph Conrad Literature Festival).

The Faculty of History:

Institute of History: The Faculty of History of the Jagiellonian University was launched in its present shape in 1992, after the division of the Faculty of Philosophy and History into two separate units took place. It is formed by the long-established Institute of Archaeology, Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Institute of History, Institute of Art History and the Institute of Jewish Studies. The research carried out at the Institute of History covers a very broad chronological spectrum: from antiquity to the present times, in 40 thematic groups, including history of Poland and world history. The Institute of History offers full-time and part-time undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate studies in the field of history.

The Institute of Jewish Studies:

The Institute of Jewish Studies at the Jagiellonian University was established in 2000 as an autonomous unit of the Faculty of History, as a result of the transformation of the Interdisciplinary Department of the History and Culture of Jews in Poland (founded in 1986). The Head of the Institute of Jewish Studies is Professor Edward Dąbrowa, PhD. At present the Institute of Jewish Studies consists of three units:

  • The Section of the History of Jews
  • The Section of the Jewish Culture
  • The Section of the History of Judaism and Jewish Literatures

The academic activity of the Institute Jewish Studies is focused on cataloguing and publication of sources concerning the history and culture of Jews in Poland, organising and conducting interdisciplinary academic studies connected with the history and culture of Jews from antiquity to the present day, with particular focus on religion, literature and Jewish languages as well as architecture and art. A significant position in the work of the Institute is also occupied by studies in the fields of Anti-Semitism, Holocaust and the post-war history of Jews.

Programme

The Interdisciplinary MA Programme in Polish Studies, Jewish Studies, and History is a graduate interdisciplinary study programme in English which lasts four semesters, however, there exists a possibility of defending MA thesis after the third semester.

The outline curriculum of the studies

1st SEMESTER

Students follow canon courses, module courses common to all the specialties, and participate in the Polish language courses (in the case the student is able to present a document certifying to his/her knowledge of Polish, he/she may select another language).

2nd SEMESTER

Students follow canon courses, select module courses in one of the four specialties, participate in the Polish language course (in the case the student is able to present a document certifying to his/her knowledge of Polish, he/she may select another language) and in the translatorium.

3rd SEMESTER

Students follow canon courses, module courses common to all the specialties, they participate in the Polish language course (in the case the student is able to present a document certifying to his/her knowledge of Polish, he/she may select another language), the MA seminar suitable for a given specialty, and the translatorium; they also complete an internship at an institution of their choice (when approved of by the academic supervisor and the curriculum board).

4th SEMESTER

The defence of the MA thesis.


The student who chooses the module in theatre studies must complete two obligatory electives: in Drama Analysis and Theatre and Performance, he/she may also, with the approval of the director of studies, take up two other courses instead of the Statistics and Demography and Jews in Poland II planned as a part of the curriculum.

Elective courses may be completed in any semester.

In order to graduate from the studies and obtain the MA degree the student is required to complete 810 contact hours awarded with 120 ECTS credit points as well as write, submit and defend the MA thesis.

The students are obliged to complete an internship at a selected cultural institution approved of by the academic supervisor and the academic board of the institution.

The course in the Polish language (of 150 hours) is an obligatory course (ending with an examination). In the case the student is able to present a document certifying to his/her knowledge of Polish, he/she may select a course in another language.

The MA thesis is presented in Polish, and in the case of foreign students in English. In exceptional cases – with the approval of the director of studies of the Faculty of Polish Studies and the Chair of the Academic Board of the Faculty of History – it is possible to present the dissertation in one of the official languages of the European Union.

The fourth semester of studies is free of charge. 

The admissions limit in the academic year 2018/2019 is 25 persons. In the case of a higher number of applications than the set limit, admissions will be determined by the order of applications.

In each case registration must be followed with admission fee. Successful registration will be confirmed by Jagiellonian University in 12 days after each registration period ends.

After the candidate is informed about the positive decision, he or she is required to enrol for the studies (by sending all documents required upon enrollment) and pay the fee. The documents should be sent to the address of the Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities:

Registration must be followed with the admission fee in amount of 75 PLN / 18 EURO / 20 USD.

 

ADMISSION REGULATIONS

 

Both Polish citizens and foreigners may apply for admission to the MA studies in English.

The ranking list will be drafted on the basis of the order of applications determined by the date of sending in the required documents (according to the date on the postal stamp), in keeping with the schedule of registrations for studies.

All candidates in order to confirm their registration are required to submit the following documents:

  • scanned copy of the application form printed from the individual OAS account and signed by the candidate,
  • scanned copy of higher education diploma, entitling its holder to undertake second-cycle programmes, or—if the candidate does not have the document yet upon registration—scanned copy of certificate issued by the granting institution, confirming passing the final examination (diploma examination), including information on their final examination grade, diploma dissertation grade, final diploma grade, and grade average calculated in accordance with the granting institution regulations, and on holder's eligibility to apply for second-cycle programmes in the country of issue,
  • scanned copy of the supplement to the higher education diploma, or of the official transcript of records, or—if the candidate does not have the document yet upon registration—scanned copy of student’s record book (indeks), or other document including a full list of courses completed and grades received,
  • scanned copy of candidate's ID card, or of their passport photograph page,
  • scanned copy of motivation letter,
  • reference letter by a research fellow holding at least degree of Doktor (to be delivered by regular post to the address of the unit responsible for the application process that can be found in the study programme card in the "contact" tab),
  • scanned copy of Curriculum Vitae (résumé) in the Europass format, available at: http://europass.cedefop.europa.eu/en/documents/curriculum-vitae,
  • certified translation into English or Polish of all submitted documents issued in a language other than English or Polish.

 

Candidates who hold higher education diploma obtained outside Poland are required to submit additionally the following documents:

  • higher education diploma obtained outside of Poland is required to be authenticated with apostille or legalised.

All candidates are required to submit the following documents:

  • the original application form printed from the individual OAS account and signed by the candidate, as sent scanned upon registration,
  • photocopy of higher education diploma, or—if the candidate does not have the document yet upon enrolment—certificate issued by the granting institution, confirming passing the final examination (diploma examination), including information on their final examination grade, diploma dissertation grade, final diploma grade, and grade average calculated in accordance with the granting institution regulations, and on holder's eligibility to apply for second-cycle programmes in the country of issue, together with candidate's written declaration to submit the photocopy of the document (together with the original document available upon request) by given deadline—under the pain of board denying admission,
  • photocopy of the supplement to the higher education diploma, or of the official transcript of records, or—if the candidate does not have the document yet upon enrolment—candidate's written declaration to submit the photocopy of the document (together with the original document available upon request) by given deadline—under the pain of board denying admission,
  • photocopy of document certifying candidate's command of the study programme language of instruction (foreign language)—does not apply to native speakers and to candidates who completed secondary school programme with that languages as language of instruction—or a document issued by the university unit responsible for the study programme certifying that candidate's command of language is sufficient for undertaking studies,
  • photograph (35 mm x 45 mm) taken without head covering, against light background, unless candidate holds the JU Electronic Student Identity Card,
  • photocopy of candidate's ID card, or of their passport photograph page (together with the original document available upon request),
  • certified translation into English or Polish of all submitted documents issued in a language other than English or Polish,
  • for enrolment by post: declaration of submission of original copies of all documents required upon enrolment for inspection by no later than 28 September 2018—under the pain of board denying admission.

 

  • Candidates who hold higher education diploma obtained outside Polandare required to submit additionally the following documents:
  • higher education diploma obtained outside of Poland is required to be authenticated with apostille or legalised.

 

  • Candidates who do not hold Polish citizenshipare required to submit  additionally the following documents:
  • photocopy of document certifying candidate's possesion of health insurance or casualty insurance for the period of studying in Poland, or photocopy of the European Health Insurance Card (together with the original document available upon request), or declaration of taking out the insurance in the National Health Fund (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia) immediately upon beginning of the first semester—in case of enrolling by post, written declaration to submit this document by no later than 28 September 2018 has to be enclosed to the set of documents submitted for enrolment—under the pain of board denying admission,
  • photocopy of medical certificate confirming lack of health conditions disqualifying the candidate from undertaking study programme (together with the original document available upon request—or, if the candidate does not have this document yet upon enrolment, or in case of enrolling by post, written declaration to submit this document by no later than 28 September 2018 has to be enclosed to the set of documents submitted for enrolment—under the pain of board denying admission. 

 

Documents required upon arrival

 

All accepted candidates must submit the following documents for verification:

  1. Original or an official copy of the diploma of higher education completed on the undergraduate (first-cycle) or graduate (long- or second-cycle) level together with its supplement *

* In case the applicant does not have one - a certificate issued by the granting institution that confirms passing the diploma examination and contains diploma examination grade, diploma dissertation grade, the final grade on the diploma as well as the applicant's written declaration to submit the original or an official copy of the diploma by a given deadline or otherwise the applicant will not be admitted

  1. Medical certificate that confirms the lack of health conditions disqualifying the applicant from undertaking study programmes
  2. Photocopies of documents (with the originals available upon request) that certify the applicant's legal stay in the territory of Poland, i.e. visa or a temporary/permanent residence permit or other document that allows for stay in the Republic of Poland
  3. Photocopies of documents (with the originals available upon request) that certify the applicant's possession of health insurance or casualty insurance for the period of studying in Poland*

* The European Health Insurance Card, or a declaration of taking out the insurance in the National Health Fund (Narodowy Fundusz Zdrowia) immediately upon enrolment

  1. Passport
  2. Proof of nostrification of higher education diploma issued by the board of the organization unit of the higher education institution in Poland, authorized to entitle academic title of doctor in the given domain of science or art or disciplines of science and art related to the field of study that was granted by the higher education diploma obtained abroad, or the applicant's written declaration to nostrify the higher education diploma by the end of the first semester under the condition of withdrawal from the University *

* it considers the applicants – holders of the higher education diploma obtained abroad, issued by the institution outside the education system of the European Union countries, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) or a party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or the country with which Poland has signed an agreement on mutual recognition of education

  1. Higher education diplomas obtained outside the territory of Poland have to be authenticated with apostille *

* If issued in the state that is a party to the Hague Convention from 5 October 1961 or legalized.

Sworn translation into Polish of all the submitted documents is required if they were issued in language other than English or Polish. 

The tuition fee per semester is 3 000 euro PLN and it covers the costs of:

  • All the required courses as well as the academic supervision and office hours
  • Access to the computer laboratory with the wireless Internet, the university libraries and all the university facilities
  • Dedicated administrative care, student integration programme, assistance in the organisation of practices and internships, student orientation

The fee does not cover: the insurance, the costs of travel from/to the US, food and accommodation.

Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities provides places in the student halls of residence and offers assistance with organising accommodation

The fourth semester is free of charge.

The tuition fee is to be paid by 20 September at the latest, by means of transferring the money to the account of the Jagiellonian University.

Loans

According to an agreement between the U.S. Department of Education and the Jagiellonian University (OPE ID Number 03597300), the Jagiellonian University participates in the Title IV, HEA Program.U.S. citizens may apply for Federally Guaranteed Stafford loans under the Title IV code G35973. (The Medical School has its own code: G12224.) This code was established in January 2002 and therefore is sometimes missing from some older databases. (It is also sometimes listed with a different prefix: 035973)

 

How to proceed with your loan before studying at the Jagiellonian University

You may apply for Federally Guaranteed Stafford loans under the Title IV code of 035973 (which is also sometimes listed as G35973). Please note that there is also a separate code for the Medical School of the Jagiellonian University (012224). All students in all non-medicine programmes (including Biotechnology, European Studies, Polish Studies, Psychology, etc.) must use the 035973 code. Please make sure that you (and your lender) are always using the correct code. Using the wrong code may result in the lender deciding that you are not attending the declared programme and lead to a request for immediate repayment of your loan. The road to getting a Stafford loan is fraught with acronyms, including FAFSA, SAR, ISIR, EFC, EFA, SAY, COA and MPN. The first form that you would need to fill out for a loan is The Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA)

What is apostille and how to get it?

Apostille is an authorization of your document, issued by the state, that assures its validity and enables its international recognition. To get apostille on a copy of an original document, you first need to have the copy officially certified by a notary public. If you plan to get apostille, find out where you can obtain it and contact the relevant institution.
