Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Erika Fischer-Lichte studied Theatre Studies, Slavic Languages and Literatures, German Philology, Philosophy and Psychology at Freie Universität Berlin and Hamburg University. From 1973 to 1996 she was a professor of modern German Literature, Comparative Literature and Theatre Studies at the universities of Frankfurt am Main, Bayreuth and Mainz. In 1996 she joined the faculty of the Theatre and Performance Studies Department at Freie Universität Berlin and is currently the director of the International Research Center “Interweaving Performance Cultures”, also at Freie Universität Berlin. Between 1995 and 1999 she served as president of the International Federation for Theatre Research. She is a member of the Academia Europaea, the Academy of Sciences, Göttingen, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, and the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in Halle, and has held visiting professorships in China, India, Japan, Russia, Norway and the USA. 

Her research interests and recent or forthcoming publications focus on the interweaving of performance cultures in the context of historical and contemporary forms of globalisation; transformative aesthetics; performances of ancient Greek tragedies since 1800 worldwide; and performance-related concepts in non-European languages.

Fischer-Lichte has published more than 30 books and 300 essays in scientific periodicals, handbooks, etc., in the fields of aesthetics, theory of literature, and art and theatre, in particular on semiotics and performativity, theatre history and contemporary theatre. Her publications include The Semiotics of Theatre 1992 (German 1983), History of European Drama and Theatre2002 (German 1990), The Show and the Gaze of Theatre 1997, Theatre, Sacrifice, Ritual. Exploring Forms of Political Theatre 2005, The Transformative Power of Performance: A New Aesthetics 2008 (German 2004), Performativität. Eine Einführung 2012, The Routledge Introduction to Theatre and Performance Studies 2014 (German 2010), Dionysus Resurrected. Performances of Euripides’ The Bacchae in a Globalizing World 2014, The Politics of Interweaving Performance Cultures: Beyond Postcolonialism 2014 (ed. with T. Jost, S. 4th Joseph Conrad International Literature Festival

think: literature!

The motto of this year's edition of the Festival, Think: Literature!, has many meanings. One refers us back to the experience we have persistently sought to associate with literature since the very first edition of the Festival: the experience of literature as an encouraging reflection on the world, its problems, and on ourselves; literature is not just light entertainment, but also an invitation to distance ourselves from the charging world, from opaque reality, from trivialities and clichés that surround us on all sides. The motto's other meaning is equally important: it is difficult not to marvel at the fact that in a world dominated by haste and superficial information, literature – the art of fiction and hope – still exists and continues to provoke conversation. Literature gives us multiple pleasures, including the pleasure of thinking and discussing, which is attested to by the long hours our guests spend talking to large audiences in Krakow every year.

This year, we have invited personalities from different areas of culture, each known for their explicit views not just on art, but also on contemporary reality. Zygmunt Bauman, Orhan Pamuk, Jeanette Winterson, Krzysztof Wodiczko, Peter Eszterhazy, Robert D. Kaplan, Dubravka Ugrešić are all artists whose voices are heard all around the world. They will be accompanied by the best and the most influential among contemporary Polish writers, including: Marek Bieńczyk, Eustachy Rylski, Krzysztof Varga, Andrzej Stasiuk, Dorota Masłowska, Wojciech Jagielski, Magdalena Tulli, Michał Witkowski.

Think: literature still exists, still provokes reflection, still serves as an alternative to the world in which we would rather not live, and still opens broader horizons than those we have come to know.

In search of lost worlds

We do not face the world as a strange object placed in front of us. The world is a plan, a bold one, without which nothing that exists has any significance...

And this is where the essence of searching for lost words lies – in projecting one’s life in the future, in signalling things that can never become reality for if they do – like Albertine’s arrival in Paris, Gombrowicz’s nostalgia for Buenos Aires, and Cioran’s comeback to Paradise – existence is ultimately doomed to failure. Obviously, words are just a poor reflection of reality, horror is inexpressible, an adult will never again be a child, and rivers will never again be clean. But that is the way it has to be, we will never witness another golden age for nothing like that has ever existed. The only inexhaustible thing in this world is the future, a promise of the unknown, a white figure against a white background.
