A discussion with professor Krzysztof Michalski, an authority on Friedrich Nietzsche’s writings and the author of Płomień wieczności [Flame of Eternity], a book devoted to the German philosopher. The discussion focused on the influence Nietzsche’s philosophy has exerted on the contemporary humanities, forcing them into a reflection and a revision of the categories they use. The convenors touched upon hermeneutics, interpretation and the conditioning of human experience by language (while considering the fact that language always involves an excess of sense and meaning); by drawing upon a unique theory of time they arrived at an existential approach towards interpretation as a movement necessary not only for establishing the relation of the subject to the world, but also (and foremost) the relation to oneself (in the world). The space of the humanities, for which the notion of interpretation seems to be a central issue, is the space of conflicting perspectives, but also of antagonistic “interests”. The panelists used this vantage point to analyze threats and challenges awaiting both the humanities departments within the university as well as research centres that are functioning outside academe, but are based on common interest in the search for knowledge and its development.

Franza Kafki, The Zuraü Aphorisms. A panel discussion. Participants: Stanisław Kasprzysiak, Artur Szlosarek, Michał Paweł Markowski. Prowadzenie: Grzegorz Jankowicz.
The Zuraü Aphorisms are unique in Kafka’s opus. Their uniqueness resides, among other things, in the special form that the writer used only on that occassion. First, he wrote them down in his notebooks among other texts and then he would rewrite them on 103 separate slips of paper, providing each aphorism with a single number. Aphorisms were issued for the first time in 1953 together with Kafka’s other unpublished writings, in a posthumous edition by Max Brod, Betrachtungen über Sünde, Leid, Hoffnung und den wahren Weg [Meditations on Sin, Pain, Hope and the True Way]. When in the 1990s Roberto Calasso was collecting materials for his new book on Kafka, K., he discovered in the Bodleian Library a folder with the aphorisms which he decided to translate into Italian and publish in the original order. That was the beginning of The Zürau Aphorisms. The discussion on Kafka and the new translation was led by Grzegorz Jankowicz, Artur Szlosarek (Kafka’s translator), Stanisław Kasprzysiak (Calasso’s translator) and professor Michał Paweł Markowski, Ph.D.

Jagiellonian Seminar by Derek Attridge (York University) Reading and Responsibility.
In his lecture Professor Attridge expounded his theory of singularity of literature as well as readerly responsibility for interpretation. Referring to different philosophical traditions and literary theories, Attridge reflected on the nature of the process involved in the creation of an innovative work of art and the way readers respond in the act of interpretation to its innovativeness, inventiveness and singularity. Attridge appealed for "responsible" reading and demonstrated readerly responsibilty in action by interpreting poems of Emily Dickinson and Paul Muldoon, once again positioning literature in the sphere of ethics.

A debate organized on the occasion of Derek Attridge’s first book in Polish. New book release: Michał Paweł Markowski’s Nieobliczalne [The Unpredictable]
A book launch introducing Michał Paweł Markowski’s Nieobliczalne [The Unpredictable], the last part of the tetralogy consisting in the previously published titles: Anatomia ciekawości [Anatomy of Curiosity], Występek [Transgression] and Pragnienie i bałwochwalstwo [Desire and Idolatry]. The essays included in the new volume originated, as Markowski has it, in passing, on the sidelines of his more substantial intellectual endeavours, giving him an opportunity to change his style and break out of the overbearing institutional framework that demands a specific rythm of thinking and writing. Without this break-out or the sojourn into the unpredicable regions of thought, writing would be inconceivable. The basic aim of this book is to answer the question whether writing about existence is still possible in the era of late modernity and if so, to examine the ways in which it can be undertaken without succumbing to tedious pathos. As the author claims, Nieobliczalne introduces a project describing the complicated relationship between literature and existence. It was exactly this relationship as well as the chosen problems of literary theory and philosophy that were the subject of the conversation with the author conducted by Andrzej Franaszek and Grzegorz Jankowicz.

Meeting with professor Leonard Neuger, Ph.D., the Director of the Slavonic Institute at the Stockholm University
The biography of professor Neuger, his emigration to Sweden and his (initial) situation of a person that not only found himself in an alien country but also became alienated from language provided a departure point for a discussion on the position of the „other” in culture and the possibilities of opening it to difference (“culture” meaning not only Swedish culture in particular but European culture as such). Professor Neuger’s personal history, including his academic experiences, provided ample ground for the revision of thinking about work within the humanities as well as their position and validation at the University.

Jagiellonian Seminar by Samuel Weber (Northwestern University, USA): The Politics of Singularity.
In his open lecture Professor Samuel Weber, one of the most eminent American deconstructionists, analized the notion of singularity which made a tremendous career in deconstruction. The departure points for Weber's discussion were Thomas Hobbes' The Leviathan and the concept of the body politic, as well as the position of an individual in socio-political structures. By drawing on Freud, Derrida and Benjamin, Weber attempted to create a new perspective for research on the notion of singularity that would go beyond the traditional binary oppositions individual/political and private/public.
